Start Your Project the Right Way

Use this checklist to help plan your barndominium. The more information you have ready, the smoother and faster the process will be.

1. Property Information

Before starting your build, make sure you know the details of your land.


  • Property address or parcel number
  • Lot size and acreage
  • Is the land cleared or wooded?
  • Does the property have road access?
  • Is there power available nearby?
  • Water source (well, city water, or other)
  • Septic system needed or city sewer available
  • Any known flood zones or restrictions

2. Permits & Local Requirements

Every county has different requirements.

  • Building permits required
  • Zoning approval for barndominiums
  • HOA restrictions (if applicable)
  • Site plans required by county
  • Engineering or stamped drawings needed

Choose the features for the outside of your building.

  • Exterior metal color

Before construction begins, the land must be prepared.

  • Land clearing
  • Grading and leveling
  • Driveway access
  • Drainage planning
  • Utility trenching
